The 52 Things Project: #1 Set Up a River of News

My resolution for this year is to create and document a thing a week. Could be a photograph, a web app, a recipe write up, a piece of woodworking, or anything else. The parameters are that the project has to be done and documented between Monday and Sunday each week.

The first Thing ties in with my News Years clean up of RSS and podcast feeds. To try to avoid getting sucked into an endless cycle of checking news sites and twitter, I’ve created several lists news sites and some of the high volume feeds from my RSS reader and created a “River of News” using Dave Winer’s River5.

The river is deployed on my shared host here: rivers.pdemarest.net, so I can access it from any computer of device.

I took some time yesterday to clean out my RSS and podcast feeds. Trying to be more deliberate in my media consumption.

As a RSS (and twitter) completionist I moved a lot of news and high volume general interest sites to a [River5](https://github.com/scripting/river5) so I have a place to scan headlines. Leaving my RSS reader for meatier personal and topical content.

I’m also going to limit my time on Twitter and Facebook and focus more on [Micro.blog](https://micro.blog)

Some day I’m going to have a magnum of champagne and and a sword. Until then, why I awake at midnight.
